In Highlands Today a "Guide To Area Lakes" it is stated that Highlands County has more than 95 lakes including 39 with public access. One of the main attractions of these fresh-water lakes is fishing for bass, Crappie or Specks as they are known locally, catfish and perch.
Bird watchers will appreciate Placid Lakes and surrounding areas. There are resident populations of alligators, Osprey, Sand Hill Cranes, Egrets, Blue Herons, Wood Stork and the state bird the Blue Scrub Jay. Placid Lakes has a beautiful lakeside park. The grounds are set up with bar-be-cue grills and covered picnic tables. Every property owner is entitled to an access key. The key is available to the Placid Lakes Town Hall. The Town Hall is a recreational hall complete with kitchenette, a microwave, refrigerators and a nice homey atmosphere. The main meeting room accommodates bridge clubs, blood pressure screening, and education classes for children and adults. This building is available to every property owner in Placid Lakes. Town Hall is rent-free and must be reserved.

Recreational opportunities are abundant in Placid Lakes. Lake June In Winter with 3,504 acres borders the northeast boundaries of Placid Lakes and Lake Placid has 3,320 acres is on the southeast side of Placid Lakes. A short distance is Lake Istokpoga that has 27,692 acres the largest lake in Highlands County. The many lakes of Highlands County provide outdoor opportunities for boating, water skiing, fishing, swimming and picnicking.
